No... don't worry, we didn't move Cooper to a big boy bed yet. Nor did we move Kelty to an outside kennel (although that would remove a lot of hair from our house). Rather, we decided that the boys were old enough for their bunk beds to be put together. We had them separate for a long time due to being in separate rooms. When we put them in the same room after moving to Missouri, I wasn't ready for Ethan to be up on a bunk yet, so we just put the beds side by side.
Well, they had been asking for bunks and I was ready for them to have more space in their room so up the bunks went a couple weekends ago! I LOVE the extra space they have. The only thing I don't love is how hard it is to make their beds now!! That part really stinks! But it does create a space that stays much cleaner (so far) because when they throw their clothes on the floor, you notice right away when you don't have both beds on the ground. And it's harder to just throw stuff on their beds now which relieves the mess too!
So, this is their new place to sleep and so far things are going very well!

One Proud Mama...my baby is growing up
This morning Trevor was sitting in his room looking at books while I as hanging up clean clothes. I asked him which book he wanted me to read to him when I was finished with the clothes and he said he didn't want me to read to him. He promptly started reading a book to himself. And not just a picture book. He started reading the full, long version of Go Dogs Go. He read and read and read. A little help on some of the tricky words like 'there' or 'again', but read almost the whole thing!
I'm so very proud of you Trevor! I can't wait to see you grow and blossom in your reading skills...it's so fun to see the excitement in your face as you figure out that the letters you have been learning for so long now make up so many different and fun words!

Sledding, snowballs & snowmen
Almost two weeks ago we had a wonderful day of snow. It was really the first substantial snowfall where it actually stuck to the ground. The boys had school, but after school we delayed doing homework so we could go outside and play before the sun started setting. I just love the days when we throw the routine out the door and we have fun!
The snow was AWESOME packing snow! So, of course, we had to make a snowman after playing on the sleds for just a bit. Rick had to go into work at 4am on this particular day and much to our surprise he was able to come home a bit earlier than normal and came to play in the snow with us. And everyone knows that when Daddy plays in the snow it leads to a snowball fight! It was one of the best 'after school' days we've had in a long time!

Winners & Not Winners
On Friday and/or Saturday nights we try to play some sort of family game if we are at home for the evening. On this particular evening we played Uno Attack and usually Trevor is one of the last two to get rid of his cards, but it was a good night for him and he was first to get rid of them both games. This was Trev's happy face after winning....
and Ethan's face after coming in last place for the 2nd time (which is not normal for him).

We Are So Fortunate
Recently, I have been connected to some blogs about families that have either lost a child or have a child with a severe disability or something of that nature. They really are very sad blogs to read and I wonder why I get sucked into them. But to read of the heartache and the triumphs at the same time and the struggles and the little victories is amazing to me. I get sucked in. 100% sucked in. It wasn't until today that I realized why I am so enamored by these stories. And it's because it could be me. It very easily could have been our life. Writing of the daily struggles, writing of the little victories for a child with a disability.
But it's not. And we count our blessings each day!
We are one of the fortunate ones that are on the "less severe" side of the pendulum for a child with a disability. It's even hard for me to write "child with a disability" because we don't have any glaring signs of a disability. But it's true. Trevor has a disability called Spina Bifida. He will ALWAYS have it. ALWAYS. And some day we will have to explain it to him.
Someone on the outside would never know that Trevor has it. But we know it. We secretly worry when he gets a rash. We question what he was into, what new things did he use or play with. Did he have contact with any latex? We've never had a problem with latex, but it's said that people with spina bifida have a higher likelihood to have latex allergies. So we think about it often and take precautions (although we are pretty relaxed in our efforts most times.) When he says his back hurts or his leg hurts or his side hurts, our minds immediately go to, "is this part of his spina bifida showing signs?" Will we have to deal with a tethered cord in the years coming up? Will we recognize the signs early enough of that tethered cord if it reaps its ugly head?
Who knows.
We are so fortunate. We have a laughing, running, walking without assistance child. He doesn't need a catheter. He doesn't have a shunt in his body like the 80% of others with spina bifida. We've noticed that his lower body is not as flexible as other 5 year olds, but if he didn't have spina bifida we would just say "he's not a very flexible kid". No biggie, right? And he still has some accidents at night. No biggie for any other child at the age of 5. But with him, our minds immediately go to, "is his bladder not strong enough when he's sleeping or does he not feel the sensation of having to go?" We don't know yet, but we think he will be ok. He has so many more dry nights than wet ones so it's just taking him bit longer to get there... but he's getting there.
We really don't know how good we have it. We think we do, and we thank God each time we see Trevor running, playing, jumping, and just being 5, but really, we don't. We don't because we've never experienced that other side of the pendulum. And I think that's why I get sucked into these types of blogs or stories. I know in my heart that we could be there. Why we aren't... I really don't know. But I am thankful that we are not.
Trevor is our more "trying" child. He tries to push the line further and further each day and I won't lie, we get upset with him. He is frustrating some days and he makes us wonder what he's going to be like when he's 7 or 10 or 13. However, on days when I am reading these blogs, I step back and remember that I am thankful, so very very thankful that he is even here with us! He is talking to us. He is doing chores and coming to the dinner table without the use of a walker or leg braces or worse case scenario, a wheel chair. We are fortunate!
So, maybe that's the reason I feel the need to read these stories that others write of their daily lives with a loss or a disability. It's to keep me grounded about where we are and where we could have been had things not gone like they did with Trevor. And it's to remind me that Trevor is our miracle and we should thank the Man Upstairs each and every day that he is running, jumping and moving around, device free.
We are so fortunate.

Just My Boys
So, I don't really have a big story to tell but there have been a few pictures taken over the last few days that I thought I'd share...
Our sweet and littlest boy.
On the way to school yesterday morning he fell back to sleep. It was chilly outside and I didn't start the van before heading out so he had his hat on. This is what I found when I took him out of the van... I just love how his little eyelashes are poking out from under the hat.
And this is my oldest... wanting to vacuum. It needed to be done so you can imagine the happiness in my heart when he said that he wanted to do it. He only lasted about 2 minutes and then said he was done, but hey, when you you start something, you need to finish. So he finished up the bedroom and then went back to playing ;o)
For the Super Bowl, the boys were sad we didn't get to cheer on the Packers, but decided they would cheer for one of the teams anyway. Of course, they each picked a different team to make things interesting. Last week during Catholic Schools Week they had their face painted and Trevor loved it so he wanted his face painted again for the Super Bowl. Ethan liked that idea as well so they both ended up with painted faces. I had no say in the design or the colors - the boys did it all. I just had to follow their direction.
One thing I did learn though, is that RED face paint does not come off very easily. Well, it comes off, but leaves a lasting impression of what was there. Trevor went to school on Monday with a faint "Y" still on his cheeks. Thankfully he didn't notice it so there was no fussing.

Catholic Schools Week - 2012
Every year at this time the Catholic Schools have a special week dedicated to them. At our school, they have a different theme each day and they can dress up and not wear uniform clothes (that's a big deal for the kids)!! This year the overall theme is "Faith. Academics. Service." The individual days have the following themes: Monday - PJ day, Tuesday - Camo Day, Wednesday - Fake and Injury Day, Thursday - Dress Like an Animal Day, and Friday - Grandparents Tea day so they wear their Sunday best.
The boys have had fun with it this year (and I have too). Monday and Tuesday were pretty straight forward. No big costumes or planning need there. Wednesday, they decided they wanted to have a black and blue eye. Ethan knew that this meant a "black eye" or bruised eye and wanted his to look like this...
Trevor took it literally when Ethan said it and was adamant that he wanted "Black and Blue" Eyes and was specific that he wanted them like this...
So was it an injury day for him ... well, no. But he like it and he had fun with it and that's all that mattered.
Thursday (today) is dress like an animal day. and not just any animal. You had to pick an animal that started with the same letter as the first letter in your first or last name. Ethan immediately said he wanted to be an Eagle. Ok, an eagle. We can figure something out. I loved how the hat turned out; however, I already know how to make it better if he wants to wear it again....

Trevor wanted to be a T-Rex and was ok with that until he saw the T-Rex mask that we could make (I found it online). After seeing it, he wasn't so sure that he wanted to be that scary. So, we found a dinosaur costume to make out of a green hoodie and he was all for that.
I have never made a full costume for the kids so this was all new to me as well, but for some reason I was up for it this year. So off to making the "T-Rex" costume we went and this is where we ended up come Wednesday night when all was said and done. (Trevor requested the rainbow spikes... not just green because that would be boring according to him.)
So, I will say that I had a lot of fun making them. However, I will also say that my house took a beating because of it. No cleaning (or very little) got done earlier this week. The dishes sat in the sink longer than normal. I did get dinners made so that was good. And I really did have fun making them. They are NOT perfect By. Any. Means, but the kids were always excited when they would come home after school to see how far I had gotten on their costume. And that was fun for me to show them how things were progressing. So, for this year, the costumes are done (and hey, maybe they can just wear them for Halloween, too, and then I won't have to think of anything come October!).
My Dino and Eagle ready to leave for school this morning...

Blenders & Baths
It was a relaxing weekend around here. A few things that we had to do like a company party, church, and folding laundry, but other than that it was low key. So, it was a great time to try some new things.
First new thing was bath time with 3, yes THREE, boys in the tub. For quite awhile now, Ethan has been taking showers rather than baths, but when he heard that Trevor was going to play in the tub with Cooper, he decided a bath wasn't just for "little kids" anymore. They had a blast and poor Cooper didn't even realize that he was right in the middle if the cross-fire.
Then on Sunday, since we had some down time after church before the Packers played, I decided to make some food for Cooper. Carrots and sweet potatoes to be exact. He loves his carrots and now we moved to sweet potatoes which he loved just the same. This is the first time I have made my own baby food and I have to admit that it is kinda fun to do and I feel really good when I know he is eating food that I made rather than the store bought food. Not that it makes any difference (as Ethan and Trevor both had the store bought food), but it's fun to do something a little different with each child.

Visiting Santa - 2011
Tonight Santa and Mrs. Claus were downtown on the square at a local ice cream shop. What a fun place to go visit him! And it was perfect. Not busy at all so Santa had plenty of time to talk to the boys and even told them about how he had 2 other brothers and that they should always remain friends like they are now because as they get older they will be the best buds and can have a lot of fun together! What a wonderful thing for them to hear from Santa and not just ol' mom and dad.
The boys loved talking to him and did a very good job telling Santa what they were wishing for for Christmas. Ethan wants a DS and Wii games, a new leather football and a new baseball glove for this summers baseball season. Trevor asked for a top, a new truck and a race car. Cooper, well he didn't really talk to Santa, but Santa wanted to keep him on his lap all night!
I hope the magic of Christmas can always show in their eyes like it did tonight. Just the excitement and awe when they see Santa and Mrs. Claus makes it fun. And I know the magic will always be there because even after they learn the "fibbed truths" of Christmas, the real reason, the birth of our Lord, will still remain. But there is just something about the sparkle in a child's eyes when Santa shows up...the innocence. I wish it could always remain...

Christmas Tree 2011
Go figure that just as I start to clean up the boys' room, the doorbell rings. It's Mr. FedEx guy with a package for us. Normally, I can just set the package on the table and open them later, after I finish what I was doing. But not this time. You see, we (or should I say, Rick) ordered an early Christmas present for himself and to make me happy he added a few "extra" items. Items like a keyboard and a camera adaptor. These items fit nicely with the iPad he ordered but give me the added benefit of using it for things that I would like to. This blog, for instance. Without the camera adaptor, I couldn't upload photos to the blog. What fun is a post with out pictures, right?
So, you see the FedEx man delivered the camera adaptor today. That is why I have put everything on hold and am now sitting here typing this post. I just HAD to try out the adaptor to make sure it works. Just doing my duty as a wife and consumer of a product. Gotta make sure things work the way they should.
So, Keyboard. Check. Working great today. Camera Adaptor. Let's try it out.
Last night we decorated the Christmas tree. Normally, it's me decorating, but this year, the boys were all about putting on the ornaments. So, I unpack them, handed them to the boys and they decorated. Rick helped put on a few of the heavier ones that needed "sturdy" branches, but other than that it was all the boys. I think I put on one ornament. that's it. And that's not like me. As Rick told the boys, "boys, you will come to learn that Christmas is Mom's thing. Don't mess with it. She knows where things are and has them right where she wants them to be." That was told to them as I was sternly telling them to stop digging in the bin with all the ornaments and that I would give them an unpacked ornament in a minute. ;)
So, the tree is decorated. The boys had fun. And Cooper even got in on the excitement for a bit.
Dang.... can't get to the photos. Off to the other computer to post them. Looks like I'll have to play around some more to figure out how to get into Blogger ;o)
Thanks to the Thoresen's we have been adopting the "Santa's Hat" tree topper; however this year, the boys are requesting a star for the top of the tree so we may need to change things up a bit. We'll see if they remember next time we head to the store or if they ask me to make one.
Trevor couldn't quite get the hat on straight so Ethan got to take a turn putting it up there. I was holding my breath as Rick was holding him.... all I saw was his foot kicking the tree, Rick losing his balance, and both of them heading right into the tree.
Thankfully, it didn't happen and the tree was standing at the end of the night. Good job boys!
