This Week's Conversations
Just some random conversations that we've had with the kids this week. Amazing what comes out of their mouths or what is in their minds...
Trevor: Ethan, are we? (meaning "where are we?")
Ethan: We're on Earth.Trevor: Ethan, are we? (meaning "where are we?")
Trevor: Mama, no workin'.
Mom: What's not working, Trevor.
Trevor: Window no go down. Change bad-deries. (as he is trying to get the window down in the van... thank goodness for childproof locks)
As we're driving to Lowe's....
Ethan: Dad, where's heaven?
Mom (interjecting before Dad's response): Heaven's way up above us in the sky.
Dad: Heaven is where ever you want it to be, Ethan.
Ethan: It's way out in outer space isn't it, Dad?
Dad: Yep...
Ethan: Dad. We're not on our way to Heaven now, are we.
Trevor: I want big bed like Ethan (when he was still in his crib)
Trevor: Mama, you take my crib down?
Mom: yes, we did. Now you have a big boy bed.
Trevor: Want crib back. Go get nother one, Mama.
Patience, Patience - I Keep Telling Myself
A few days ago I ordered my first blog book (our blog printed and bound into a book) and I just CAN NOT wait til it gets here! Every day - ok, I can not lie, several times every day - I check the status of the printing to see if it has shipped yet! One would think that since they told me the estimated ship date was April 1st I would be happy with that. But I want it to come NOW. Oh - give me the patience to wait and wait and wait for it to show up! (and then let it turn out as cool as I hope it'll be!)
5:05pm -- HA! I knew that estimated time was wrong! Even after telling myself to have patience, I decided to go check it again (for only the 2nd time today) and it's BEEN SHIPPED!! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.... I know what's going to happen. I'm so excited to see it (like a kid in a candy shop) and it's going to get here and it's not going to be as good as I want it to be! I won't like the colors I picked (and I did a lot of different ones just to see what the quality of the site is like), some of the pictures will be blurry, and I won't be able to read the text. Oh wouldn't that be just my luck?!? Agh heck, no use in worrying about it now. So, again I say... oh boy, oh boy, oh boy...I can't wait!

Silly = Trevor
Trevor is the clown of the family (takes after his father) and he makes us laugh all the time. Here are just a few of Trevor's silly moments that we have enjoyed over the past few months.
Trevor wearing Ethan's hat in middle of day & thinking he's sneaky by hiding cracker behind his back.
Scaring me from behind the couch and finding his way up into the pantry.
Pony rides on his brother and wearing my headband while reading books. He kept the head band on for probably 45 minutes that day!

hand prints on the table rather
than the plates.
Scaring me from behind the couch and finding his way up into the pantry.
Feeding Auntie Traci goldfish,
but then he would pull it back
at the last possible minute.
He started on the top of the slide the right way, ended up this way at the bottom.
"Helping" Uncle Craig do
his sit-ups. Such a big helper.
Giggled the entire time he
had his St. Patty's Day
hat on!

Trevor - we love all the little things you do to make us laugh! Thank you for being you!
Bored with the Hoop?
Back in February (yes, I'm catching up on some random posts) the boys had a day when they got a bit bored of using the basketball hoop the way in which it was meant to be used. So, instead of shooting a ball into the rim, they decided to do the following....

I'm happy to say that they are back using it the "correct" way, but what a fun day it was to have both a tunnel and a slide in our kitchen and not just a boring ol' basketball hoop!
Use it as a SLIDE
And... use it as a TUNNEL

Grocery Store Tantrum
We have been pretty fortunate with our boys. They have their fits and tantrums like any kids, but they typically happen when we're in the confines of our own home. That is, until today. Before nap time I realized that I needed sour cream for a recipe I was making for dinner. Rather than waiting until after naps I decided that we should go to the grocery store beforehand and that way I could pre-make dinner while they were napping. Great idea, right?
Not needing a lot at the store (only sour cream and milk), I didn't even get a cart, but Ethan wanted one of the little ones that they have for kids. I told Ethan it was a great idea but that Trevor gets to push it to the milk and he would get to push it back to the register. All was fine until we got to the milk and were trying to make the switch from one child to the next. For some reason Ethan, the one that was going to now push the cart, had the BIGGEST emotional breakdown ever!! He screamed, he cried, he jumped up and down stomping his feet and punching his fists like he was doing bicep curls! Absolutely wonderful exhibit of how we act in a store.
Now what was all the fuss about? It was because he wanted to push it TO the milk and not FROM the milk. Well... Hello.... Ethan, if you would have told me that before we got to the milk I could have changed things around! So, we eventually made it to the check out, with Ethan still crying, and figured I'd help ease some of the pain by letting him push it all the way out to the van. He agreed, but oh was this the wrong move on my part. First, he was walking like Pokey-Joe Turtle and I had to nudge him to go a bit faster since he was creating a line-up behind him. That did not make him happy and he said, "Mom, stop pushing me!" Then, we get out into the parking lot and as he was walking next to the curbing, the cart hit a hole and tipped over into the curb and of course, to follow the pattern of the trip, he went down with it. Ethan got up (crying again), I tipped the cart back up, put the milk back in it. As Ethan was walking between the curb and the now standing cart it fell over again. This time hitting him, making him fall while the cart slid down the side of this leg, giving him a huge knot on the side of his calf. That caused yet another uproar from him with screaming "Owie, it hurts" over and over and over again!
I truly hope I don't have to go through that series of events again any time soon. But seriously, it could have been sent to America's Funniest Home Videos had someone caught it on tape! No one did, unfortunately, which means that we won't be making any money off of our emotional breakdown....so why don't we just go back to being the nice boys in public and the tantrum throwing boys within the walls of our house!

My Ray of Sun Today
It was a nice, spring day here today; however, there was one particular part of the day that just absolutely warmed my heart! After naps the boys and I went outside in the backyard to enjoy the warmer temperatures. Even though it wasn't the warmest or the sunniest day, it was this time that was the brightest part of my day.
After getting out some soccer balls, footballs, golf clubs and sand toys for the boys, I sat up on the deck and watched them play. Trevor just played and played -- not once making a fuss. He played in the sand. Scoopin' it up and fillin' up his bucket (and lap). He kicked the soccer ball around on the grass while Ethan was throwing the football up onto the deck for me to catch. He leaned over the swing on his belly and swung all by himself. He climbed up the little rock wall on the swing set so he could pretend like he was driving a bus with the steering wheel, and then slid down the slide (and landed on his feet). He and Ethan walked up the hill in our backyard and then ran down it! And they did it over and over and over again.
Our little boy, our miracle of a child, was running and kicking and climbing. Things that we were never sure if Trevor would ever do, he is doing like a pro. He amazes me every single day with all that he has accomplished against so many odds! It is on days like today, that I remember what he has overcome thus far and that nothing, nothing should ever be taken for granted. I just can't express how grateful and indebted I am to all those who have said prayers for him and to the Lord who has answered so many of those prayers for us! We have a little miracle with us every single day and he brings a special warmth to our hearts that no one else can.

Let the Games Begin
The time has come. The games of March Madness have started. What does that mean around our house?? Pretty much that nothing will get done. Well, I shouldn't say that. Little things will get done. Laundry will continue to be loaded, unloaded and folded. The dishes will get put away and things will get picked up. But these are all things that can be stopped and started several times while a "game break" is taken to see who's winning. However, large projects that take concentration and uninterrupted time - not going to happen! It's just fun to watch the excitement and determination that these college kids have during the tournament time.
This year Rick and I are once again doing brackets with our crew from WI, and Ethan even picked his bracket again this year. I do have to say though, that Ethan's bracket last year was much more accurate. This year being that he knows more teams and state names and is a true Aggie (USU) fan, his bracket got a bit skewed! His final four picks include - Louisville, USU, Pitt and Gonzaga. His champion USU. (I'd like to see USU go further into the tourney too, however, I just don't think they're going to make it to the championship -- sorry).
Now, here are some of his reasons for the picks he made. He picked American because "We live there." He picked Minnesota because "We have to fly there when we go to WI." And USU got picked because, "I just like them!"
Time will tell who the eventual winner is.... Go March Madness!

Very Odd Combination
One morning we were getting ready to eat breakfast which is typically just cereal or waffles during the week. We were running low on the amount of cereal left in most of the boxes, but Ethan decided that he wanted to make use of everything we had (at the same time). I told him he could finish one cereal and then have some of another since there wasn't much left of either. Against my recommendation Ethan told me quite forcefully, "No, Mom, I want to eat them together!"
The "them" in this case .... Foot-Loops and Life cereals. Ugh - not the best combo in my book, but he at it and said it was YUMMY!
Big Boy Bed
We weren't quite ready to take Trevor out of his crib yet, but lately, all he has been asking for is a big bed like Ethan's. So, after thinking long and hard about it, why not switch him over to a big boy bed while he WANTS to. It might make the transition easier if he's wanting to do it on his own, right!?! So, we started out by getting new beds for both boys. We decided to get bunk beds (which means Ethan gets a new bed too)rather than just another twin bed for Trevor. That way, should we ever want to bunk them and put them in the same room, we can. But for now they are going to stay in their own rooms.
(and I hate to admit it, but the "getting used to it time" was also for me. We have not had a crib-free house since mid-2004, before Ethan was born. I was not ready to have everyone in the house "all grown up". I liked having to go in to get him out of bed as he was standing there smiling. I liked looking over the rail before I went to bed to see him safely tucked in - in his crib. It was hard to let go of that stage when Ethan moved to a big boy bed, but just 1 month later, Trevor filled up the crib and things just felt right. Now, I am going to take Trevor out of it and not have someone waiting to fill it. It is going to be taken apart and put in a box for some later time (maybe). Ok - so it's really my issues that caused so much havoc in our house during the change over. Not that Trevor wasn't ready. I wasn't ready. Whew... there it is. I admit it. The first step to overcoming the problem !)
Once we had the bed we figured we should let him sleep on the mattress a couple times before taking his crib down - just to give him some "getting used to it" time instead of taking it away cold turkey. Did it work? Yep.... he did a great job on it (and so did Kelty).
We had a couple rough naps, but bedtime went pretty well. I think the fact that Ethan was using a new bed made it a bit enticing as well.

Now that we knew he was doing ok on the mattress, it was time for the real bed. Ethan and Trevor both helped Daddy put it together.
We had both crib and bed in Trevor's room for a couple days and then the crib came down, too. It was a sad day, but Trevor was so excited to have his very own Big Boy Bed.
Happy St. Patrick's Day
To celebrate the day, the Allen's came over to play and do some crafts - or maybe it was just an excuse for Julie and I to get together and chat...who knows. Either way it was a fun afternoon. The kids had Leprechaun hats to wear/decorate, a pony-bead rainbow to make and enjoyed their snack of green popcorn, green grapes and green milk. The decorating of the hats was the biggest hit. What kid wouldn't love stickers and glitter glue pens? The bead rainbow just took too long to do so it wasn't such a hit (or at least I think that's the reason).
Julie, Chloe, Lily, Brigham, & Cannon - thanks for coming to play with us...we loved having you over!

Mountain Weather
These shots show a 24-hour difference in weather from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon.
One minute we were outside playing hoops on the deck.
and the next, this is what's on the deck.
and we're having to do a lot of this...

The Little Things
This is a "catch-up" post, but I needed to write about what my hubby did for me (or should I say, to me). You see, my extended trip to WI in February fell over the major (ha) holiday of Valentine's Day. Rick and I never really celebrate this holiday - we may get each other a card, but that's about it - so I didn't think much of it when I made flight reservations that didn't bring me and the boys back home until the 17th.
Rick, feeling lonely and maybe a bit creative, on the 14th decided to do something just for me! He planted all these things around the house for me to find upon my return to normal life at our home. And I am STILL finding them - almost a full month later.
They are little post it notes that have a "love theme" to them... all kinds of little sayings for the one you love. To date, I have 50+ papers in this pile and I'm sure there are still several that I have yet to uncover. You might be asking, where did he hide them all? Well, I'll tell you just a few of the places...my make-up case, each and every drawer in the bathroom and my dresser, the kitchen cupboards, on the washing machine (behind the cover since it was flipped up), on the window sills where I couldn't see them until I opened the blinds, in the refrigerator, in the dryer sheet box, in the pocket of my pants that were hanging in the closet, etc...
After the sorrowful beginning to the month that we had and being away from him for a week, it was fun to come home to this. It made me smile each and every time I found one. Thank you, Sweetie!
And here are some of my favorite sayings from the little notes.
~ If you think of me as often as I think of you... then neither of us is getting much else done.
~Every time I follow my heart, it leads me right to you.
~Can I keep you?
~Your love makes every day like a little party!
~Every day I discover something new to love about you.
~I thought I couldn't love you more, but every day I do.
~I love you today much more than yesterday...
~I'm yours! All Yours! Think you can handle it? (some days I wonder...)
~I love....loving you.
~You are my everything.
~Whatever else I may be doing today, I'll be loving you.
~I'm so lucky to have you to love!
There were a couple that had a series of "i love" statements... these are just a few of those...and I love them because they are what makes love, a marriage and a true friendship last -- the little things.
~i love the way you listen to me. I love your eyes. I love your smile. I love all your toes. I love the way you answer the phone. I love the way you kiss. I love the way you eat spaghetti. I love the way you look at me. I love the way you introduce me to your friends.
Thanks for the smiles and (to steal one of the sayings from above) I'm so lucky to have you to love!

Oh Cmmon....
A little preface before you read this post. This post will contain some "not so fun" graphic descriptions of what my kids put me through today. If you have a sensitive stomach... please, please PLEASE stop reading now.
So, you continued, did you?!? I hope you enjoy it because as I was in the moment, I'll be honest, I was NOT enjoying it so much!!!
The day started as a pretty low key day. Trevor and I are both fighting colds so I figured a cartoon, movie, low-key activities day was in store for Ethan, Trevor and I. And that's how it started. Then comes Mom's brilliant idea to do baths before nap time to hopefully loosen up Trevor's cough a bit. Great idea, right?
I thought so.
And it was.
That is, until Trev decided to poop in the tub while he and Ethan were in it. (I do applaud Ethan for always promptly telling me when Trevor poops in the tub). But this poop in the tub day was a bit different than the previous ones I've experienced (thankfully there haven't been too many of them). Seeing as how Trevor is not feeling the greatest, it ended up being one of those amazingly wonderful soft, nothing sticks together kind of poops. Great mixture when it's with the bath water!! EEEEWWWWEEE GROSSSSSS!!
Out come the kids and they move to our bathroom to shower off and get cleaned up. The toys, water and poop all remain in their bathtub for the time being! Thank goodness the Health Department didn't stop by our house at that time because I definitely would have had some violations going on. The boys got their showers taken and then the clean up work had to begin. I shooed them downstairs to play while I got out cleaning supplies, plastic bags and rubber gloves! Ewe... once again. So gross!!
However, I came to realize that the Man Upstairs knew this was going to happen to me. Several things make me say that.
1. I didn't shower this morning. I didn't shower because He knew that I would 110% need to take one after cleaning out all the poop in the tub.
2. A few days ago when I bought a shower liner for our other bathroom, I decided (for some reason) to pick up a second one to have as a reserve. He knew that today was going to happen and I was going to throw out the liner in the kids tub after it was floating in the water with all the poop in it.
3. I had been thinking about throwing away the "sticky mat" that I always put down in the tub for bath time. You know, the ones so they don't slip in the tub. It was getting a bit yucky from all the use it's had and just didn't clean up very well anymore. Guess He knew that it was time. I didn't' even TRY to clean it up today. Just rinsed off the stuff I could and put it right in the garbage!
4. No authorities showed up at our house this morning. It's a good thing that He knew it wasn't a good time. I had a poop-filled tub, a sink with water & bleach in it for the toys that were in the poop filled tub, I had a dog barking uncontrollably at the other dog walking in our yard, I had a child (that would be Trevor) SCREAMING at the top of his lungs because he was taking his first "real" shower and I was forcing him to put his head under the shower water to rinse out the soap, and I had another child (Ethan) who was already done in the shower and was running around our house as naked as the day he was born!
Oh my oh my... what a morning.
I know I'll think twice the next time I decided to do baths before nap time.

When Mom is Sick
When a mom is sick what changes??
The short answer to the question...
Nothing.
It's true - when a mom is sick, a minimal amount of things change around the house.
The kids still get dressed.
The dog still gets fed.
Dinner still gets made.
The kids still get fed breakfast.
Lunch.
And dinner.
The shrieks of "MOM" coming from the kids still get dealt with.
Dishes still get unloaded from the dishwasher.
And dirty dishes get put in.
The dog still gets let in and out to go potty.
Diapers still get changed.
The kids still get played with.
The toys still get picked up at the end of the night.
The kids' teeth still get brushed.
The beds still get made.
The kids still get their daily dose of hugs
(minus the kisses so they don't get sick, too).
The laundry in the dryer still gets folded.
Dirty bums still get wiped.
The mail still gets collected and opened.
Everything still goes on...
And what happens at the end of the day when a mom is sick?
She collapses and hopes that sleep time
lasts for a very long time.
