One Proud Mama...my baby is growing up

This morning Trevor was sitting in his room looking at books while I as hanging up clean clothes. I asked him which book he wanted me to read to him when I was finished with the clothes and he said he didn't want me to read to him. He promptly started reading a book to himself. And not just a picture book. He started reading the full, long version of Go Dogs Go. He read and read and read. A little help on some of the tricky words like 'there' or 'again', but read almost the whole thing!

I'm so very proud of you Trevor! I can't wait to see you grow and blossom in your reading skills...it's so fun to see the excitement in your face as you figure out that the letters you have been learning for so long now make up so many different and fun words!

Our First REAL food - YUM

Cooper had his first bit of "hard & real" food today.  He was done eating his cereal, green beans and peaches and I was picking up the kitchen from earlier in the day.  I had a box of graham crackers in my hand and decided that he should try one today.  Oh man... he was like a kid in a candy store!

He just played with it for awhile and didn't realize that he could put it in his mouth without me saying, "Yucky, Cooper.  No.  No."  But once he finally did and saw me looking at him with a smile on my face rather than the scolding look, it was game over!  He gnawed on it.  He broke pieces off of it and chewed them up.  He loved it.  He pounded it on the tray - making a crumby mess, of course.  But he loved it!  He even looked for the piece that he dropped and when he found it, immediately put it in his mouth.

Good job little man... your eating world is going to start changing again.  Get ready.. it'll be a fun time! (and hold on, Dad, it's going to get a wee-bit messier, too!)

Pick Me Up

Sometimes as a parent you forget that even your oldest child needs time to feel like they are still little.  One of the things I miss most as Ethan and Trevor get older is picking them up.  Rick and I still pick up and hold all three of our boys on occasion, but not nearly as much as we used to!  I miss that!  And obviously, last night Ethan did, too!  Thanks for making him still feel little (and so very loved), Rick!

My 1st Assignment

(catch up post #6)

Before Trevor even had his first day of Pre-K, he had his VERY 1st homework assignment to do.  His "All About Me" sheet that was to be taken back to school on the first day.  He was very excited to do his homework and was a good student to get it all done at the same time.

in case you can't see some of the answers, the paper reads:

My name is Trevor (he had to cut the letters out and paste them in the correct order)
I am years old.
My birthday is on September 19, 2006
I have 2 brothers and 0 sisters
My pets are Kelty (a dog)
I like to play the Wii, play outside, color & paint.
My favorite color is blue.
I want to be a professional baseball player when I grow up.

2011 - 2012 School Year has Begun

Catch up post #3

This year is a big year. We officially have 2 children in school now - as of August 16th.  Ethan has moved up to 1st grade & Trevor started all day, Pre-K at Holy Rosary, too.  It's fun to see them both excited for school and Ethan is more than ready to show Trevor the ropes of "how to do things" at their school.

Of course, before the first day we had to take our pictures on the porch...

And then we added to it this year by taking some out by our front tree.... the boys loved being able to climb in it before school.

And of course we needed one in front of school before going in
(don't pay attention to the fact that they have different clothes on in these pictures compared to the ones above.  I didn't make them wear multiple outfits on the first day ;o)  Rather I'm the bad mom who forgot her camera the first day & made them stand there one the 2nd day.)

And they both wanted a picture with their teachers.  Honestly, it was them who wanted these pictures, I did not push them to do these.  After seeing some of the other kids getting theirs taken on the first day they wanted some with the teachers too.  Good boys :)

My First Smiles

Just minutes before the Mueller's arrived for their visit, I was able to get my first smiles out of Cooper.  He was sitting in his bouncy seat on the kitchen table as I was cleaning up the kitchen.  I turned around and started talking to him and he just started smiling!  It. Made. My. Day!  You know your children love you and depend on you, but when they can smile at you and give you an outward sign of that love, it makes my heart melt!

I of course, grabbed the camera after the first couple of smiles, and prayed that he could give me a couple more when I came back.  He did, but they weren't quite as big as the first ones. :(  But this is what we got "on tape" for our first smiles to Mom.

Cooper's Growing Stats

This first month we've had several different doctors appointments with Cooper.  Nothing out of the ordinary, but we've been able to track his weight with them.
  • His first official appointment was on 7/18, but I didn't want to wait that long to check if he was gaining weight so I took him in on 7/11 just to weigh him.  He left the hospital at 6 pounds 12 ounces and was back up to birth weight - 7 pounds 6 ounces - on July 11.
  • One week later at his first doctor appointment he continued to gain weight and was 7 pounds 9 ounces.
  • A week later he was still looking a little jaundice to us so I took him back in to make sure his levels weren't rising.  We had them checked and he was on the high side of normal, but nothing was out of the ordinary.  His weight was 7 pounds 15 ounces that day (July 25th)
  • Ten days later at his 1 month appointment (on August 4th), he weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces.
On August 4th, his first "true" appointment, Cooper was a champ.  He was wide awake while we waited (and waited and waited).  I tried to keep him awake, but he just couldn't do it.  He clonked out just before the doctor came in and wanted to stay sleeping so badly, but of course, the doc needed to check him out and wake him up.  But he did great and went right back to sleep after the doctor did what he needed to do.

Cooper continues to grow like a weed.  He was 8 pounds 9 ounces and 21.5 inches long.  Can you believe that... he grew 2.5 inches in one month.  That's crazy!  And put on another 10 ounces in 10 days.   He is far from a "chunky monkey" but he going in the right direction ;o)

Cooper - 1 month

August 1st.  August 1st.  Really, it's August 1st already?  One month ago at this time, I was in the operating room, getting ready to meet our newest addition.  Well, really, I was just laying there, not feeling much of anything.  Being told to take some deep breaths to keep my blood pressure up.  Tears slowly dripping from my eyes (don't know why, but that's just the way I was during the surgery).  Talking to Rick - asking him what was going on.  I really wanted to know.  Trying to listen to all the doctors/nurses talking about the procedure and random things (like what kind of car they wanted, what they were doing for the weekend, etc).    That was 1 month ago TODAY.

It's been a full month since we welcomed Cooper to our family.  Some days it feels like yesterday and other days it feels like forever ago.  But no matter how long ago it was, it's been wonderful to have him here with us!

So, what's Cooper been up to.  Well, not much.  As you know, a 1 month old really isn't doing a whole lot yet.  He's sleeping, he's crying, he's poopin'.  But he is also making silly faces at us, lifting his head up more and more, staying awake longer during the day, and only getting up once or twice during the night to eat.  He's gaining weight... when we went into the doctor last week (July 25th) to have his bilirubin levels checked he was 7 pounds 15 ounces (that was up from 7 pounds 9 ounces on the 18th of July).

He's normally a joy to have with us; however, he's been a bit gassy lately (or at least I think that's what it is).  But it really throws him for a loop and he screams and screams and screams, then "toots" and sometimes is ok.  Other times, he'll fuss and fuss and fuss and then be completely out the next second making it seem as if it's just his thing when he's trying to fall asleep.  As Rick and I have said in the past - we're just trying to figure out Cooper's combination and then all will be ok.  Each kid has a different combination you need to figure out and then you can co-exist very nicely.  Until you unlock that combo, it can be tough... tougher for some than others, depending on how hard that code is to crack.  We've been pretty fortunate to find that combo rather early on with the boys and hopefully Cooper will be no different.

Here are a few  pictures of him at 1 month old...oh how little they are!  If they could only stay like this forever (the cuddly, snugly part of them, not the fussy, screaming part ;o)  )  Love you, Cooper!
Oh, I love this big bed you lay me on!!

A little blurry, but I love the smiles he gets when he's sleeping...must be the angels talking to him.

Just getting some love from big brother, Trevor

Look how strong I'm getting!

Cut for $0.25

Boy oh boy... if only labor could always be this reasonable.

Ethan wanted to help Rick cut the lawn today.  During their walk around the yard and in between the "teaching" moments, Rick mentioned to Ethan that this is something he can do when he gets a little older to make some $$ around a neighborhood (or even here at our house).  He immediately picked up on that and asked if he could cut the whole back yard and get a quarter for it.  A quarter for the whole back yard??  SOLD!  And you're HIRED!

He's a Big Kid Now

(I was singing the title of this post just like the song "I'm a Big Kid Now" from the Pull-ups commercials)

Just the other day, Trevor went for a quick trip to the store with Rick in his vehicle.  Instead of switching over the big car seat we just took Ethan's booster seat (with the back put on it) and let Trevor sit in that.  It was a special treat for Trevor to be in a big boy seat!  However, that was the end of the little boy car seat!  Trevor asked and asked and asked when he could have a seat like Ethan.  We had been thinking of getting him a booster seat since he is a the max weight limit for his current seat so this seemed like as good a time as any to make the switch.

After looking at many many review of different seats, I ordered one and just a few days later Trevor's package came in the mail. He could. not. wait. for me to take it out of the box and put it in the van.  He sat next to me patiently as I put it together and immediately sat in it once I said I was finished.

And even though Trevor is normally exicited to go pick up Ethan at the end of the day anyway, today he was even more eager to get in the van.  I don't know how many times he asked me if it was time to go yet, but I do remember that I was relieved once we were finally on our way to pick Ethan up from school.

(Oh, and don't mind the mis-placed seat belt....it was fixed before we ventured out of the driveway ;)   I wanted to quick take the pictures because I just couldn't pass up the HUGE smiles he had on his face! )

Our November Jack 'O Lantern

October is supposed to be the month of jack 'o lantern with silly smiles and teeth; however, we've been blessed to have one at our house in November this year, too.   We've been waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for Ethan's top teeth to fall out. They've been loose for quite some time and one of them was just hanging there, but he would have nothing to do with us pulling it.  Where was our wonderful pediatric dentist neighbor when we needed him?!?   But the day finally came when it fell out - this past Sunday.

This is what he was looking like missing one tooth....

And then today that look changed once again. His bottom one's are loose, too and one of those decided to come out while he was eating a banana after school.  So now our "jack" is missing two teeth and soon to be three once that other top one falls out!  What some fun Christmas pictures we will have with his toothless grin!

Just Go Along With It

Sometimes you just need to humor your children.  Ethan got an idea from America's Funniest Home Videos to attach a rocket (via a string) to a loose tooth and then shoot the rocket.  The end result being that the tooth will come out as the rocket is shot up into the air.

He didn't have a rocket, but he did have a foam dart gun that he thought would do the trick.  As Rick and I suspected, it didn't work, but hey, at least he got to try it out!

part of being an athlete

As any athlete knows, it's a good day when you get done with your sport and don't have any injuries to show for the hard work you just put in.  However, every athlete also knows, that it is when you are doing the simplest of things that you get hurt.

This lesson was learned by another future athlete in our house.  Ethan came home from school on Thursday limping and told me he had twisted his ankle during class.  He was playing some sort of game in gym class (outside) and when trying to get up on the curb he only stepped with 1/2 of his foot.  Of course, the other half, which then carried the rest of his body, fell off the curb - twisting his ankle.

There's not much you can do for an twisted ankle except ice it and stay off of it for a bit.  Because of that (and because we've both "been there done that") all Rick and I said to Ethan was, "We know it hurts.  It'll be sore tomorrow morning, but it'll get better.  And here, put some ice on it!"  Something every athlete learns at some point during their days..... 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.

Ethan relaxing and icing his ankle before bedtime.

Trevor's 1st Day of School - 2010

Since Ethan started school on August 17th, Trevor has been asking each and every day, "Is it time for my school yet?"  For the last 3 weeks I have been saying, "No, not yet Trevor.  In a few more days."  Well, the day finally came.  We made sure this weekend that he knew on Tuesday, it was going to be his day to start school.  He has been so excited!!  And today that tune didn't change.  He had his back pack ready... and was off to school without a hitch.  But before he could go, he wanted pictures taken just like Ethan had done on his first day of school.

So without further jabbering on about how proud I am of Trevor and how much he's grown over the summer or how much I'm going to miss him the 6 hours he's gone each week or how I can't wait to see what he learns this year.... here is my BABY going off to his first day of ECE (Early Childhood Enrichment) at the Methodist Church in town.  Oh and how did I almost forget this - he gets to be in the "big kid" class upstairs this year!  That makes going to school even more exciting!!

Good luck, Trevor.  Use your manners. Be nice to your friends.  Listen to your teachers. And most of all, Have Fun in school!!  I'll be waiting for you after class...

Ethan's 1st Day of Kindergarten - August 17, 2010

It's the first official day of school for Ethan.  His 1st day of Kindergarten!  He was so excited this morning... a new year...2010/2011 school year

a new class and classmates

Mitchell and Ethan before school

a new teacher...Ms. Thoma

a new routine....
(thanks to these new routine sheets we made (and thanks to FlyLady for the idea))

and new clothes...
(but one would never know since he'll look the same as he did last year in his uniform clothing; however, he was excited as could be to wear his new clothes and shoes!!)

Some sweet parts of the day included the note that Daddy left for the boys this morning since he had to be at work before they woke up...

and the fact that Trevor wanted to take a picture with his big brother

and had to give him a hug before we left school....
this picture is a "bit" blurry, but you get the point. Trevor was going to miss his big brother on this first day of school!

The day was a success and he had a good time with his new teacher and class.  He was all smiles when I picked him up...

Some of the highlights he told me about after school included:

  • We had cookies today!

  • We got to take a tour of the school and I knew everyone in Mrs. Edwards class (1st Grade) and most of them in Mrs. Nold's (2nd Grade).  We got to go visit all the big kids downstairs, too.  But there was something leaking in the storage area (oops... better get that fixed)

  • We got to play kickball in the new gym because it was raining outside at gym time.  and we only used 2 bases today, Mom.

  • There are rules in Ms. Thoma's class - No talking when you are working, Keep your hands to yourself, No kicking, punching, hitting or pushing.  (those sound like good rules to me!)

  • No homework today.
Here is his first picture of the year...

Here's to hoping it's a good year and he continues to have fun and enjoy school.
